Seattle Children's, formerly known as Children's Hospital and Regional Medical Center, stands as a distinguished pediatric medical facility nestled in the vibrant Laurelhurst neighborhood of Seattle, Washington, within the United States. This renowned institution is dedicated to providing exceptional healthcare services to newborns, children, adolescents, and young adults aged 0 to 21, encompassing a broad spectrum of medical specialties. The Seattle Children's Hospital project remarkably demonstrates how ICON BIM can adapt to and incorporate field-verified conditions, provide input, and accommodate design changes without extending the BIM schedule.

The Challenge

The project encountered various obstacles, primarily from incomplete designs in areas where the installation was already underway. Once the designs were finalized and approved, the ICON team swiftly prioritized the completion of detailing and coordination in those specific areas while also expediting the delivery of necessary spools to the fabrication shop. ICON's objective was to eliminate the need for the field team to revisit areas they had already worked on. Notably, the project was being constructed from the top floors downwards, necessitating a strategic adjustment in our spooling approach to minimize back-and-forth for the field team.

The Solution

By adjusting the spools, ICON implemented a solution that enabled the seamless installation of components through the floor while the floor above was being installed. This innovative approach allowed the field team to complete their work on the current floor and eliminated the need for additional personnel to climb upstairs and establish connections between the two floors.

Results

As a result, the project saw the successful installation of mechanical piping, steam piping, plumbing, and medical gas systems. The ICON Detailers maintained constant communication with the field team, seamlessly incorporating on-site conditions into the model. Given that this was a tenant improvement build-out, thorough scanning, and adjustments were made to all cores. The connection points for services on each floor were carefully verified in the field and then seamlessly integrated into the model. The direct and effective communication between the ICON team and the field played a pivotal role in the smooth completion of the project.
